Softshell vs. Hardshell: Which Jacket for Which Weather
Walk into any outdoor shop and you'll find two walls of jackets that look nearly identical and behave completely differently. One wall breathes and stretches; the other blocks weather like a tent fly. Buy from the wrong wall and you'll either soak from rain or soak from sweat.
The actual difference
A hardshell is a laminated, membrane-based jacket — a face fabric bonded to a waterproof-breathable membrane (Gore-Tex, eVent, Pertex Shield and many house brands). It is fully waterproof, fully windproof, and only moderately breathable no matter what the hang tag claims.
A softshell is a woven, usually stretchy fabric with no continuous membrane. It is water-resistant at best, highly breathable, quiet, and comfortable across a huge range of effort levels.
The two aren't competing products. They're answers to two different questions: how do I stay dry from the outside versus how do I stay dry from the inside.
Where hardshells win
- Sustained rain or wet snow. No softshell survives an hour of steady rain. A hardshell does, indefinitely.
- Strong wind at low effort. Standing on a summit, sitting on a chairlift, walking an exposed ridge — total windproofing matters more than breathability when you're not producing much heat.
- As the outer layer of a storm system. Over a down or synthetic midlayer, a hardshell is what keeps the insulation working in bad weather.
The costs: hardshells are crinkly, clammy at high output, and expensive per year of life — the membrane and the DWR coating both degrade.
Where softshells win
- High-output activity in cold, dryish weather. Ski touring, winter running, fast hiking, cycling. You produce litres of vapour; a softshell lets most of it out.
- Everyday cold-and-breezy use. For the school run and the commute, a softshell is quieter, stretchier and more comfortable than any hardshell.
- Light precipitation. Snow that stays frozen brushes off a softshell. Drizzle beads off a fresh DWR coating for a while.
The cost: when the weather turns properly wet, a softshell wets through — first the shoulders, then everywhere.

Reading the hang tags
Numbers that mean something:
- Waterproof rating (mm hydrostatic head): 10,000 mm is genuinely waterproof for rain; 20,000+ mm is for driven rain and pressure points under pack straps. Softshells typically sit under 5,000 mm or list nothing at all.
- Breathability (g/m²/24h, MVTR): treat it as a rough ranking tool between jackets of the same brand, not an absolute. Lab conditions flatter every membrane.
- "Windproof softshell" usually means a membrane has been added (Gore-Tex Infinium and similar). You gain wind protection and lose most of the breathability advantage — it's a hybrid, closer to a stretchy hardshell.
The honest two-jacket answer
Most people who spend real time outside in winter end up with both: a softshell worn 80 % of days, and a hardshell that lives in the pack or the cupboard for the 20 % of days that would ruin the softshell. Bought on sale, that pair often costs less than one flagship "do-everything" jacket — and works better than it, too.
